Given the choice between a job candidate with a perfect resume and one who has fought through difficulty, human resources executive Regina Hartley always gives the “Scrapper” a chance. As someone who grew up with adversity, Hartley knows that those who flourish in the darkest of spaces are empowered with the grit to persist in an ever-changing workplace.

“Choose the underestimated contender, whose secret weapons are passion and purpose,” she says. “Hire the Scrapper.”

I believe that this doesn’t apply only to workplace. Surrounding yourself with scrappers is definitely enriching and fun.

  1. That was a very inspirational talk. I agree that I wish there were more recruiters that share her mentality. As a human resources professional myself, I always find myself trying to balance the needs of the organization with creating equal opportunities. Typically, the human resources department isn’t the final decider so it becomes important to align with hiring managers so they’re not surprised when they get ‘scrapper’ resumes.

    1. Hi Isa, great to have an HR person’s feedback! In my personal experience often hiring managers were more open or comfortable to hiring scrappers than recruiters. I think it comes down to the person.. who is skilled or talented to asses people’s abilities and potential based on CV and short discussion. Something I couldn’t do πŸ˜‰ Are you involved in hiring?
